Standard precautions should be applied to all patient care, regardless of suspected or confirmed infection status of the patient in any setting where health care is delivered. These precautions are designed to protect the dental health care team on the one hand and to prevent them from spreading infections among patients on the other hand.
Standard precautions include:
          • hand hygiene
          • use of personal protective equipment
          • respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
          • sharp objects safety
          • safe injection precautions
          • sterile and disinfected instruments and devices
          • clean and disinfected environmental surfaces
Each of these elements of standard precautions will be discussed and translated into practical recommendations.
Hand hygiene and all its aspects and concerns will be treated thoroughly, including practical training.
